Handbuilt coiled pottery was the standard, and only, form of ceramics for thousands of years. With the invention of the wheel, around 4000 BC, coil built forms could be constructed and decorated much faster using early turntables. Early records indicate that around 3000 to 2500 BC the early Egyptians turned the 'coiling turntable' into a foot driven (or assistant driven) potter's wheel.
