Lowfire glazes, sometimes referred to as earthenware glazes, are those which mature in the range up to cone 04 (1945°F). Due to the low maturing temperatures involved, a wider range of colors, effects and surfaces are possible.
Generally speaking, lowfire glazes are oxidation glazes, that is they need oxygen to develop their color during the firing. Electric kilns provide a clean oxygen rich atmosphere as opposed to the dirtier oxygen poor atmosphere (know as reduction) produced by gas combustion kilns. As the availability of electric kilns for home and studio use has increased so too has the selection of lowfire glazes expanded.
Long gone are the days of limited color palettes and boring glaze surfaces. Due to recent advances in chemistry, firing control systems and intermixable glaze lines, the ceramic industry has seen a virtual explosion of new colors, textures and effects that were thought impossible only a few years ago.
Now truly the hardest part of ceramics is deciding what finishing products to choose !
