ARMADILLO CLAY & SUPPLIES

Ceramic stains / colorants applied to a greenware or bisque surface and usually covered with a clear glaze.

Underglazes can be translucent or opaque, with opaques used for large solid area coverage and translucents used for details and decorations.

An oversimplification is: Opaque underglazes are mostly clay with pigment; translucent underglazes are mostly pigments with little clay.  Applying opaque underglazes to greenware can help keep them from separating from the clay body during the firing.

Generally, both types can be intermixed, in each category or between the two, producing a palette containing hundreds of color choices.

Underglazes may be used directly from the jar, but should be put into a separate container to avoid possible contamination of the remaining product in the jar.  Apply the first coat with even consistent brush strokes.  When the dark wet look has disappeared, apply the second coat at a right angle to the first.  Again, when the wet surface has disappeared the third coat is applied at a right angle to the second coat.  This will assure better coverage and help to avoid streaks and thin spots.

Lightly dampening the surface with a moistened sponge just before painting allows for a better adhesion to the ware surface.

All finished dinnerware products must be tested and approved as food safe by a certified laboratory due to possible variations in firing temperatures and possible contamination.

STROKE & COAT: Acts like an underglaze but made to be applied to bisque. Ready to use or mix to create new colors. Colors fire glossy but require a cover of clear glaze if a uniform gloss surface is desired. Apply 1 coat for a translucent look or 3 coats for opaque coverage. All are Non-toxic. Dinnerware safe with approved clear glaze. Fire to cone 06, most will fire up to cone 6.  * = gallons available

UNDERGLAZE PENCILS: Ideal for shading, fine line drawing or identification. Apply to bisque and fire to maturity of covering glaze. Max. firing temperature is cone 10 for blue, black, and green; cone 5 for brown, and yellow; cone 05 for rose. If glaze is to be brush applied, first coat should be sponge applied to prevent smudging. Do not use pencil sharpeners. All are lead free.

SEMI-MOIST UNDERGLAZE COLOR PAN SET: Intense, concentrated and opaque colors especially good for water color effects and painting fine detail. Apply to either greenware or bisqueware. Colors retain approximately same tone before and after firing, making them easy to blend and combine. All are lead free.
