Ceramic stains, Prepared stains, Prepared oxides and Modified oxides are all names for inorganic coloring material used to add color to bodies, slips and glazes. These coloring stains are usually sold in powder form and are manufactured by several companies.
Armadillo Clay is proud to offer a selection of Mason Color Work's massive colored pigment line. In its 160 years of business, Mason Color Works has produced one of the most recognized and versatile lines of inorganic pigments. Colors not listed here may be special ordered in 10 lb. increments. (please call / e-mail for more information)
All Mason stains are lead free and manufactured to be as accurate as possible, however no guarantees of accuracy can be made due to the variable nature of ceramic materials and firing processes. Purchasers must make their own tests to determine the suitability of these products for their particular purposes.
Color samples provided here are as accurately represented as the internet display process will allow. Typically 5% stain is added to transparent glazes, 10% to opaque glazes and up to 15% in clay bodies. These amounts will vary with different applications and some stains will require other chemicals to be present to correctly develop. (see notes on Mason's color links below) To achieve an even dispersion of colour without speckling, try mixing the stain in hot water and sieve it separately through a 200 mesh screen before adding it to the mixture.

Effective 06/17/2008, mason colors will no longer offer blended pigments. All single calcinations will still be available thus reducing the inventoried pigments by 60 colors.
All colors discontinued will be available by special order ONLY. They will not be blended but instead, the individual components will be sent and the customer will need to blend the materials. The minimum order for a non-stock color is 10 lbs.
All stains highlighted in red below are the colors affected by mason's changes.
