REDUCTION FRITS
DICHRO
Dichroic, literally translated, means ' two colors' and refers to the fact that a dichroic surface will show two or more colors depending on the angle of view and whether the light is reflected (reflecting off of the surface) or transmitted (passing through the surface). Dichroic glass was developed by NASA for use in space suit face shields and is now used on telescope and satellite lenses, theatrical stage lighting systems, energy efficient window glass, photographic and laser light filters and, of course, fusion art glass.
The process of making dichroic glass is one of depositing multiple micron-thin layers of various metal oxides at specific temperatures in a vacuum chamber. The layers of metal oxide only measure around 4 millionths of an inch thick but produce a dazzling array of colors controlled by the metals used in production. Dichroic fusion glass is becoming more readily available with more product choices hitting the market each year.
